Hotrod Sunset

Most car shows happen during the day,  usually in the morning hours before it gets too hot. This recent hotrod show in Katy, TX was during the late afternoon and evening hours. I went with the hope of capturing a sunset shot. As my luck would have it, some kind folks started up a conversation just as the sun was setting. Well, I didn’t want to be rude and ignore them. After we finished visiting, I only had a few moments to grab a quick image before the sun disappeared. I only had a moment between people walking by to grab a single shot without someone standing in front of the cars.

Downtown Houston from the Toyota Center

Earlier this month, my friend David and I went hunting for a photo to shoot. We had no target in mind, other than head toward downtown. We started talking about getting high for a downtown shot and we ventured to an upper level of the Toyota Center parking lot, with permission and a guard escort. Check out David’s photo here too. I shot almost the same image, so thought I would publish this version, as it is a bit different.

The side note to this image is that we went for a bite to eat right after this and spent the rest evening talking and catching up. It was the only subject we shot all night. Over all, a great evening.

The Eyes Have It

Saturday evening, my oldest daughter, Christy, and I went to a local car show. She has accompanied me on a few previous photo outings, but never a car show. We had a great time walking around and me telling her about old cars I used to own, much like my Dad did when we use to visit them when I was younger.  It was a special time together, as she is starting college next week.

One big mistake though. Both she and I were so focused on taking shots at the show, we didn’t even think of getting one together until we had already left.

One of the cool things many of the newer cars have are LED rimmed headlights. These lights could strobe or even morph colors, giving a pretty cool effect in the evening hours.

St. Louis Cathedral at Dawn

It had been several hours of running around the French Quarter, creating images with a fun group of guys.  It was almost morning and the predawn light was pushing the dark away for the day. Though the streets were still empty, the morning rush hour was soon to start. This quiet moment at the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square was one of my last shots before sitting down to beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde, which is open 24 hours a day.

That weekend with friends David Morefield, Jeremy Mancuso and Andy Crawford was about as much fun I have had taking photos since my trip to Europe. It was a great group of guys and a fun place to shoot. Andy wrote a great article on our trip if you want a feel for how a photo weekend photo trip might go. View my New Orleans gallery for other examples of where we went.
